Roofing day 3

Today is Saturday and the roofers from Resco Roofing & Renovation is here to work on my main roof. I have called for 3 base layer in total plus the cap sheet for a total of 4 layers on the main roof. A typical flat roof will have 1 layer of base and 1 layer of cap sheet for 2 layers in total. Here’s the 2nd layer being installed. The first layer goes north-south. So the second layer goes east-west.

Roofing

Here’s a video of the roofing membrane being torched onto the 1st layer.

By middle of the day, the entire main roof is done with 3 layers of roofing membrane. It looks nearly identical to yesterday’s picture. But it’s got more layers added.

Roofing

Here’s what multiple layers of base looks like. Here you see the seams between sheets but also the 2 layers that sits on top of each other.

Roofing

The two backup scuppers are also done. These scuppers sits a bit higher than the roof drain so that they shouldn’t be in use typically. But they do allow the water to flow out in case my roof drain is clogged or if there’s excessive amount of water pooling on the roof.

Scupper Opening

The problems of the day. First of all the scupper installed won’t work. The scupper is installed too close to the wall that wont’ clear my 3″ of acrylic stucco on the south wall. Secondly, the scupper is a collector box type of scupper that direct the water downwards through a spout in the bottom. These overflow scupper would work better if it’s just a through the wall scupper that allow water to freely flow outwards. Third problem is the position of the scupper, it is directly over my basement window. That’s not good because just in case water is flowing out of the scupper, you don’t want it to be pooling around the basement window.
