Dean continues to get the rest of the HVAC work done.
Now we got all the duct works done. Here is the supply and return air to the furnace. You can also see the round cut on the top that will go to the HRV.
To the right of the furnace, we have two set of flexible ducts for the HRV fresh air intake and stale air exhaust. I don’t like flexible ducts but it is really hard to route solid ducts through these spaces.
In the laundry room, we have to exhaust fan hooked up again using flexible ducts because of the space accessing issue again. And the one that’s coming straight down is the dryer exhaust.
Duct work wise, we have the low all return air here in the basement done.
We also have the supply to the entrance area and return air at the bathroom done.
That duct wall on the 2nd floor is now filled up. On the left it’s the supply to the 3rd floor. Then the return air from 3rd floor. Then the two returned air for the 2nd floor. Unfortunately due to the heat pump line set at the back, the high wall returned air has to be somewhat lower.
That 3rd floor supply goes across just before the beam right at the stair opening.
And here’s the 3rd floor return air. A proper high wall return air.
Most importantly the heat pumps are all hooked together. Here’s the heat pump in the bedroom.
The 3rd floor wall mounted unit is also installed.
The outdoor unit with the disconnect is installed and all the lines hooked up.
Finally a major milestone in terms of HVAC. I now have heat in the house. The 4 heat pump indoor units are now fully working with controller installed. As you can see it’s now at the pre-set temperature of 19 degrees. Now the setting of 19 degrees might see low to a lot of you. In my current house, the temperature is set to 24 degree. However, in this super insulated and sealed house, 19 degrees actually feel really warm. In fact, it is almost warmer than I would like. However, in the Auto mode, I can’t set temperature lower than 19 degrees. So I will leave it as is now. Right now at all 4 controller (1st floor kitchen, 1st floor office, 2nd floor bedroom, 2nd floor recreation area) the temperature all reads right around 19 degrees. So this is very good, reaching the consistent control that I want to achieve.
How efficient are these heat pumps. Well I only have 1 day of usage data. March 3rd. High of 1 degree and low of -13 degree. Total consumption is 55.5 kWh at a cost of $4.27. This will mean $132.37 / month for heating the house. Today at the current house, we are paying $130 / month for natural gas and another $300 / month for electricity. Yes the electricity has other usages other than heating but the heat pump certainly looks good right now. We will see once the house is done, overtime what the actual cost is.
