March 19th, 2014 Crew from AMX Steel showed up today and welded that unlevel beam. As I mentioned before, the framers were able to use a car jack and some wood stuck to jack up the steel beam, removed the bolts securing the beam and leveled it properly. So all the guy has to do today is to weld it in place.
February 25th, 2014 Finally today, all the structural steel installation work has been completed. It’s been nearly 2.5 months since I got the foundation wall completed. Now with all the harsh winter weather going against my, I can finally move onto the next step – wood framing.

February 23rd, 2014 Saturday morning the work on the structural steel continues. It’s a nice day, not raining or snowing, just a little windy. A lot of welding is going on to finish up the structural. One beam needs to be field adjusted and support structural welded in again and bolt installed.
Here’s a video of some welding action.

February 21st, 2014 Today’s weather is bad, raining all morning with wind gust up to 70km/h. No work is being done on site so I take the chance to survey the work that we have completed so far. So here’s what the entire structural looks like from the back of the house. The cantilevered section you see protruding from the house is the balcony.

February 19th, 2014 Day 6 of structural steel installation. Today the crew from AMX Steel continue to finish up all the moment connections on my steel structural. If you looked at the full resolution photo of the picture from past days, you will notice that all the steels columns and beams are only secured by 2 or 3 bolts and not all of them are tightened. This is so that they can adjust the frame to level and square. Once they got the structure where it should be, they then install all the bolts and tightens them. That’s what’s remaining for the next few days. They pretty much finished the back 1/3 of the house including the balcony by the end of the day. And they are going to continue to work on it for the rest of the week. Here’s a picture of the now completed back side of the house. You can see all the moment connection’s bolts are now installed and tightened.

February 18th, 2014 Today is supposed to be day 5 of the structural steel installation. But the winter weather decided to be blowing snow today. The crew came on site, assessed the condition and decided that it is not safe for them to perform the work. So nothing happened today, the work will resume tomorrow.
February 13th, 2014 Weather was either really cold or it was heavy snow for the past 7 days. Finally today is a slight warmer day with day time temperature of -2°C. Crew from AMX Steel is here continue their work on the structural steel. Last time they were here, some drawing/measurement mistake was discovered and they had to re-fabricate 6 beams with the correct measurement.

February 4th, 2014 Not much happening today. Due to the measurement error that was discovered during the installation of beams yesterday, the crews from AMX Steel decided that they will just do a field measurement again, and haul the rest of the beams back to the shop and make sure all beams are of the correct size before trying to install again.
February 3rd, 2014 Finally after a long wait the structural steel is being installed. Richard Shouli and the crew from AMX Steel is here to install the steel columns and beams that provides the structural support for this house.
Space is very tight at this site and the crane barely have enough space to work. In fact the crew brought a scissor lift but it wasn’t able to fit through the 7′ drive way.

November 16th, 2013 Today Rashid Shouli (Richard) from AMX Steel delivered the steel plates and anchor bolts that we will need for the foundation walls. The anchor bolts will be set into the foundation wall piers when the concrete is pours and the plates will be put on the bolts. Later steel posts will be welded onto these plates and installed and bolted down.
I have 8 steel post in total. So I have 8 plates, and 32 anchor bolts in total. So here’s what one set of them looks like.
